Reach for the stars in celebrity homes

Fancy moving into the house where John Lennon was inspired to write such Beatles classics as Day Tripper and In My Life? Well, for the cool price of £8.95 million, the mansion where Lennon lived for four years at the height of Beatlemania can be yours.

The six-bedroom mock Tudor house in Weybridge, Surrey, was Lennon’s home from 1964 until he split from wife Cynthia when he fell in love with Yoko Ono and eventually swapped the Home Counties for New York’s Upper East Side. The property, sitting within an acre and a half of landscaped gardens and grounds and with uninterrupted views of the Surrey Hills, now has an indoor swimming complex that’s been added since John last drove his psychedelic Rolls-Royce into the driveway.

The house is being marketed by Knight Frank and is not the only celebrity home up for grabs for those with the wherewithal.

Look a little further north and if you have £1.6m going spare, you could be moving into former boxing world champion Amir Khan’s Bolton bolthole. Another property with its own swimming pool, Khan’s old gaff naturally also has a gym and a home cinema, all neatly tucked away in two separate properties behind a gated entry.

A house that’s simply wizard

A magical time is guaranteed for the new owner of De Vere House in the Suffolk town of Lavenham, best known to generations of Harry Potter film fans as the boy wizard’s childhood home – as seen, of course, in the big-screen adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling books.

The price tag is also magically under the million-pound mark. Wave your wand in the estate agent’s direction – along with a cheque for £995,000 – and De Vere House is yours.

If an island idyll to a funk beat is more your thing, West House on the Isle of Wight, the former home of Level 42 frontman Mark King, was on the market earlier this year for a manageable £2.25m. This seven-bedroom Edwardian mansion, standing in six acres, boasted a ton of original features, such as fireplaces and Art Nouveau stained glass with original tiles and carvings.

We’re sensing a theme here with musicians. Not far from Lennon’s old place is the one-time home of Queen drummer Roger Taylor in Thursley, Surrey, another Edwardian pile recently sold with a multi-million price tag, this one £7.95m.

If a Florida holiday home is more your bag, Dragons’ Den‘s Hilary Devey is selling an eight-bedroom waterfront mansion in Miami. Cost? Yours for just £5.42m.

This LA estate is one step Bey-ond

As much as all of these properties are well beyond the reach of us mere mortals, it’s nice to know that even the rich and famous still need a mortgage to secure their dream home.

Jay-Z and Beyonce have just splashed out an extraordinary $88m on a lavish estate in Los Angeles. To fund it, the music industry’s ultimate power couple coughed up $26m in cash and funded the rest with an eye-watering $52m mortgage. Considering their combined net worth is reckoned to be around $1.16bn, it’s almost reassuring to realise house hunters are all, figuratively speaking, in the same financial boat.
