Around 1,400 new homes will be provided in Birmingham from the athletes’ village being constructed for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The village is to be built on the site of the former Birmingham City University campus at Perry Barr in the north of the city with a planning submission for the development submitted to the city council in August.
More than 6,500 athletes and officials from around the Commonwealth will be accommodated in the village during the 2022 Games. But residents in Birmingham will enjoy the permanent benefits of the development in the longer term.
Accommodation will be converted
The Birmingham plans echo those of Glasgow where the Commonwealth Games took place in 2014. The athletes’ village was constructed in Dalmarnock in the city’s east end, and once the sport was over, the properties were sold or let to local residents.
The accommodation ranged from one-bedroom flats to three-bed villas, and their design garnered a host of design and energy efficiency awards.
In Birmingham, the village’s accommodation will be converted into 1400 new homes across a range of social and affordable rent, homes for sale and private rent. There will be also be a care village for older people along with a community centre.
Work done for planning application
John Crabtree, chair of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, said: “In the seven months since being awarded the 2022 Games, there has been a lot of work done to prepare this planning application.
“Now is the time for anyone with an interest in the regeneration of Perry Barr to look at our plans in detail and give feedback to the city council planners. We want the people of the West Midlands to have ownership of the Games, and this is one of the first significant ways in which they can do that.”
