Unexpected costs are catching out home movers, according to new research.
Comparison site MoneySuperMarket has revealed that we spent an average £670 in additional costs when we move house.
That’s on top of estate agent fees, deposits and the conveyancing costs associated with buying and selling.
Adds up to hefty amount
According to MoneySuperMarket, the average Brit will move home on average 5.1 times over the course of a lifetime, so those extra costs – often not budgeted for – can add up to a hefty amount.
The additional, unexpected costs include paying for mail redirection, storage costs, calling in cleaners and installing new technology in a new home.
More than a fifth (22 percent) of those quizzed for the comparison site said they opted for a “man with a van” when moving, while one in 10 had paid for professional storage when they were between homes.
Choose low-cost, high-quality conveyancing
Rachel Wait, MoneySuperMarket’s consumer affairs spokesperson, said: “Our data shows that the average person moves five times, and although this can be stressful, one way to ease the worry is to make sure your belongings are protected at all times.”
